The Biomedical Sciences Master’s program Cancer Genomic and Developmental Biology (CGDB) is part of the Graduate School of Life Sciences at Utrecht University. It is a 2-year (120 ECTS) master program that focuses on understanding processes underlying cancer and developmental biology using techniques and applications of post-genomic research including microarray analysis, SNP analysis, proteomics and microscopy. Students of this program will learn to explore the mysteries of embryonic growth, stem cells, signaling, gene regulation, evolution, and development in relation to health and disease.
The aim of the Master’s program is to offer education and training that builds on the growing knowledge of and methodology in information technology applied to biomedical systems and processes. The master students will be trained to approach multidisciplinary problems starting from their own scientific discipline.
Bachelor students of Life Sciences seeking admission to the Cancer Genomics and Developmental Biology Master’s program should show a keen interest in the topics of its participating groups, along with a clear ambition to take part in the research in these areas. This should be evident from their choices during pre-education as well as from their grades obtained as a result of those studies. The program aims at attracting the most talented and motivated students of Life Sciences from The Netherlands and abroad.
The program does not contain tracks; it already is a quite specialized field. There are different profiles. Most students follow the Research profile. It is also possible to do a profile on Communication & Education (C&E) or Management (M). A profile is 33 ECTS and takes half a year.
The study consists of different parts that are depicted in the table. You are entirely free to plan these components yourself, most students start with their major research project. This has to be done in a group that is participating to the CGDB program. Courses and seminars are given throughout the year.
If you want to do a profile, this replaces the minor research project.
Applicants must hold a BSc in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry or Pharmaceutical Sciences. Prospective candidates must have thorough basic knowledge of molecular biology, cell biology, metabolism and signal transduction.
Applicants from schools of higher professional education HBO or laboratory school HLO will be assessed on an individual basis. Their prior education may be relevant to the content of the Master’s program.
For admission, a motivation letter and CV have to be included. An interview will usually be part of the admission procedure.
A good knowledge of English is required.
