Neuroscience & Cognition

This international Master’s programme teaches you the fundamental principles of neuroscience and trains you to perform neuroscience research as part of a multidisciplinary team. You may choose from one of two programme tracks:

  • Experimental and Clinical Neuroscience (with a biological point of view)
  • Cognitive Neuroscience (with a psychological point of view)

It is possible two switch between the tracks. The only real difference between the tracks is that they have a different Track Coordinator.

Bachelor students from Biology, Biomedical Sciences as well as students from Psychology, Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence can apply for this master. This results in a diverse group of students, with a wide range of different backgrounds. The variety of students suits neuroscience, since it comprises a which comprise a vast multidisciplinary field of research aimed at understanding normal and pathological brain functioning. The multidisciplinary character makes the neuroscience field interesting and challenging.


  • 10-week theoretical course: Fundamentals of Neuroscience: in the first weeks of the master and obligatory for all students (15 ECTS)
  • 9-month internship: this first internship has to be at Utrecht University (51 ECTS)
  • 6-month internship: the second internship may be done outside of Utrecht University (33 ECTS)
  • writing assignment: this can be a PhD-proposal or a literature research (7,5 ECTS)
  • research seminars: lectures on different topics that cover the bio(medical) field (1.5 ECTS)
  • elective courses: the graduate school of life sciences offers a great range of different electives which can be viewed here:  (12 ECTS)

If you want to apply for this master: the deadline is 1 april 2014. Neuroscience and Cognition has a selection procedure. Therefore you need to hand in a motivation letter, your grade list and resume. You can only start this master in September.
