Biobased Materials

Biobased materials are materials that are completely or in part made from biological resources. These materials play a pivotal role in the transition to a more sustainable, biobased economy and society. With the world’s fossil fuel reserves running out, a number of challenges come to mind: How will plastics be made without oil? Is it possible to produce functional materials and plastics from biological resources? Can we create sustainable materials with novel functionalities inspired by what works in nature? It is clear that we need a new generation of scientists to discover new, biobased materials using sustainable production methods.

Maastricht University’s Master Biobased Materials is located and completely taught at the BrightlandsChemelot Campus, one of the largest chemical sites in Europe. This unique setting is used to create a vibrant environment in which learning, research and genuine application of technology meet. Our programme incorporates multiple aspects of science & technology, business and sustainability which are readily available on the BrightlandsChemelot campus. Consequently, the master Biobased Materials is multifaceted and has strong interfaces on several levels namely:

  1. Interface between disciplines; the master is multidisciplinary and aims to connect the different science disciplines that are important for the biobased and sustainable materials value chain.BiobasedmaterialsMU-1
  2. Interface education – research: our teaching is closely associated to research in the UM Biobased Materials group as well as the Aachen Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials. Their involvement in the teaching programme ensures that you study challenging and relevant problems, leaving room for innovation and creativity from your side.
  3. Interface between universities: we are located close to the borders with Germany and Belgium which creates unique possibilities. Already this has resulted in the Aachen Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials; a full collaboration between Maastricht University and RWTH in Aachen, one of the leading Universities of Technology in Germany. Staff from AMIBM participates in master programme teaching, enriching the intercultural and international class-room.
  4. Interface between university and industry: The BrightlandsChemelot campus has been undergoing a strong transition towards an open innovation site, at which academic institutions work together with local industry and SMEs to create the best learning environment for young talent. Experts from the companies play an active role in teaching. In this way an integrated teaching experience is created from which all parties, but especially students can benefit;increasing possibilities to develop your talent and creating opportunities for future careers on site.

You are eligible for admission if you have a bachelor degree in one of the fields below or equivalent (includes bachelor diplomas from relevant Dutch HBO/higher vocational education programmes; these will need additional approval from the Board of Admissions):

  • Biological studies relevant to the field of biobased materials; microbiology (plant) molecular biology, molecular genetics etc.;
  • Chemistry: macromolecular chemistry, chemical engineering, bio- and organic chemistry, etc.;
  • Polymer science and engineering;
  • Biomedical Engineering;
  • Biomedical Sciences;
  • Biotechnology (including process technology);
  • Any other bachelor programmes related to chemistry and/or materials from biological sources

A student has acquired at least 15 ECTS (or equivalent) in mathematics at bachelor level. The mathematics should include the topics: Linear and/or geometric algebra, analysis & calculus, trigonometry and basic statistics (data analysis and evaluation).

The master Biobased Materials is entirely taught in English; therefore we require a thorough active and passive command of the English language. If you meet any of the following criteria, no additional proof of English proficiency is needed:

  • You are a native English speaker
  • You have completed an English taught bachelor or master

If you do not meet these criteria, you have to provide proof of English proficiency by taking either an IELTS or TOEFL test.

Applicants should ensure that their educational transcripts include an official translation into English.
