Energy and Environmental Sciences

The Master’s degree programme in Energy and Environmental Sciences focuses on the large-scale issues and contributes to possible solutions to the energy and environmental challenges. The programme is connected to the Energy and Sustainability Research Institute Groningen (ESRIG). Several research groups are joining forces in ESRIG resulting in a variety of research subjects, such as:

  • Polymer and organic solar cells
  • Climate and atmospher
  • Geo-energy
  • Combustion technology
  • Bio-fuels technology, land and ocean-based
  • Renewable energy
  • Energy and land use scenario’s and modeling

Tracks and specializations

This master has one track and two different specializations

  • System Studies on Energy and Environment (specialization)
    with a strong design-oriented, systems approach based in natural sciences. What are the possibilities for a sustainable future for a region, a country or the world as a whole?
  • Experimental Studies of Energy and Climate (specialization)
    Linked to several experimental, energy-related research specialisations. It covers a range of topics in energy research from physics to marine biology.
  • Science, Business & Policy (track)
    Comprises one year of research and one year aimed at the development of policy and management-related understanding and skills to prepare for a career in a company, consultancy or policy organization.

Study Components

The master has a two-year programm with 60 ECTs per years. Most courses are 5 ECTS. Study abroad is recommended in this master

The Master’s programme is accessible for several Bachelor degrees in Natural Sciences (e.g. Biology, Physics, Chemistry etc.).
