Biomedical Engineering

As a biomedical engineer you develop new methods for the diagnosis and treatment of patients. You work in multidisciplinary teams with medical doctors, engineers, biologists and biochemists. You can choose from two programmes in Biomedical Engineering: the Groningen Master’s degree (Master of Science) or the Erasmus Mundus programme. Both programs consist of 120 ECTS and are taught in English.


The MSc Biomedical Engineering knows two main tracks; Biomaterials and Medical Instrumentation & Imaging. In the Biomaterials track you focus on subjects like tissue engineering, implants and prostheses and physical chemistry. The Medical Instrumentation & Imaging track focuses on subjects like signal analysis, radiation physics and computer visualization.

Study components

Both tracks consist of a research project of 30 ECTS, 40 ECTS on common courses, an 15 ECTS internship at a company, hospital or laboratory and 10 ECTS on optional courses. The remaining 25 ECTS consist of five specialized courses.

Students with a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering are allowed without any further requirements. Applicants holding a universitary Bachelor’s degree in physics, applied physics or life science and technology, may be admitted on condition that any deficiencies related to biomedical engineering will be dealt with in the first semester. A special programme is available for holders of a Dutch HBO Bachelor’s degree. Sufficient English proficiency on VWO level is required. The Admissions Board will decide whether you can be admitted to the Master’s degree programme.
